Educational & School Programs
The Maine Historical Society offers a variety of programs and resources designed to help teachers and students explore Maine history. These include programs at our one–acre campus in Portland, outreach programs, partnerships with schools around Maine, and resources on the web. All programs draw on MHS's extensive historical collections and the knowledge of our professional staff.
Our education programs are built around and complement the following facilities:
- The Wadsworth–Longfellow House, a National Historic Landmark built c. 1785, was the boyhood home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, America's beloved 19th–century poet and a Portland native.
- The Maine Historical Society Museum features regularly changing exhibitions that explore themes and topics in Maine history.
- The Research Library houses the state's most comprehensive collection of historical and genealogical materials with over 100,000 books, more than two million manuscripts and maps, and 140,000 historic photographs.
- Maine Memory Network (www.mainememory.net) is a statewide digital museum that provides unprecedented online access to an ever–growing collection of more than 12,000 primary sources contributed by over 180 organizations throughout Maine.
