Exhibits

Art of the People: Folk Art in Maine
June 27 through December 30, 2008

For years, people in Maine have made quilts, samplers, rugs, carvings, portraits, and other types of decorative, personal, or useful objects as a way to express their feelings and record important moments in their life - a marriage, a graduation, a death of a loved one. These beautiful and historic artifacts provide a window into our past.

Art of the People draws from the extensive collections of the Maine Historical Society. Over 70 museum artifacts will be on view, featuring carved powder horns, decorative quilts, finely made samplers, colorful portraits, and other historic paintings. (Included with Museum Admission) More info.

Hooked Rugs
Showcase Gallery at MHS
through December 30, 2008

This small collection on display represents a range of Maine rugs over this period, including unique artistic scenes and colorful floral patterns. Maine hooked rug making has been documented to the early nineteenth century and is a craft tradition that continues today. Hooked rugs are functional items and made with a purpose. They serve as a floor covering and add warmth and color to a home.

Hooked rugs are made by drawing fabric strips through a woven backing. Antique hooked rugs were often created on burlap using scraps of fiber that were no longer usable as clothing. More recently, hookers have followed quilters in exploring new materials and new techniques. Using scraps of colorful fabric, a maker can create a design limited only by their skill or imagination.
