Trip Description

Working once again with Hewins Travel, we have put together a 14-day trip on Azamara Cruises' Azamara Journey cruise ship. This is a co-sponsored trip with the Vermont Historical Society. The voyage departs from Athens and takes a southerly route making two stops in Egypt. Here in the land of the pharaohs, history takes on new relevance. Visit Luxor, the pyraminds, the sphinx, and the Suez Canal. Ancient history and the modern world come together in Ashdod, Israel, with its young vibrant port and the biblical sites of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

The city of Haifa, on the terraced slopes of the Carmel Mountains, can be traced back to the 4th century B.C. Its five religions—Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Druze, and Baha'i—form the city's social fabric. Gaze in awe at the Baha'i Temple and its breathtaking gardens, which sprawl from the top of Mt. Carmel to its foothills.

From the cradle of Christianity, we sail to the heart of the Byzantine Empire. We'll visit Cyprus and its medieval castle built in 1000 A.D. by the crusaders and step back in time in Antalya, Turkey visiting Hadrian's Gate before sailing to the Greek Isles of Rhodes, Mykonos, and Chios. The voyage concludes with a visit to Sicily and Sorrento, Italy—both cities steeped in Greco-Roman history.
